Question: Mr. Hutchence was a highly publicized case of accidental strangulation during AEA. However, the vast majority of such accidents never show up in the media. Every year, thousands of people--young and middle-aged, male and female--botch AEA experiments and die. Embarrassed families often beg coroners to disguise the cause of death on the death certificate, and kindly medical examiners will comply, marking it as a suicide. Personally I think it's an odd world where suicide is more socially acceptable than accidental death, but there it is. The taint of sex is enough to keep these tragedies an under-reported statistic. AEA is pretty well-known and, actually, for the most part, people who engage in it do so safely. This still doesn't make the practice itself safe. In a recent case in the US, a fellow did AEA by attaching a noose to a swingset in his backyard. He got so comfortable, he fell asleep in this position and never woke up when his chair slipped out from under him. His family found him the next morning. Not pleasant. AEA requires a solid understanding of anatomy and a back-up system to ensure that if you should lose consciousness someone (or something) will immediately cut you loose. As it is far too easy for something to go wrong, I cannot recommend a safe way to try it. I'm not condemning the practice. Just warning you that it is NOT something to casually explore. If you have the fetish and must live it out, your best bet is to seek out support organizations (you can locate them on the Internet with a little patient digging), and to learn everything you can about risks and safety techniques.
