Question:
My girlfriend always gets really horny when she's on her period. Is it safe to have sex with her then?

Answer:
Well, my husband would probably tell you it isn't safe to get anywhere within a 500 km radius of a woman with PMS, but if you can tolerate your girlfriend's company during this trying time, you are home free. There is nothing intrinsically dangerous about having sex during menstrutation.

Some women report an increased sexual appetite before and during their periods. Others find that sex during menstruation helps relieve their cramps. An orgasm can work wonders on that cranky feeling, too. Some of the sensations may be slightly different--she may seem a little squishier than usual, and her sensitivity level may be different, but couples quickly adjust. Some even develop a taste for sex served _au jus_.

There are two important health considerations. First, while it's highly unlikely to occur, it's not impossible to impregnate a woman during her period. So if you normally use condoms, diaphragm, sponges, or other prophylactic devices, don't stop. There's a reason why people who use the rhythm method usually end up with a lot of children. Second, during menstruation, a woman's cervix is open. This makes her more vulnerable to pelvic infection than usual, so it is especially important during this time that you maintain good sexual hygiene. You might also consider wearing a rubber, particularly if you suspect you have any STDs or urinary tract infections.
